Camping Women
came into being in 1977 as a nonprofit, educational and service organization for women 18 and over. The two founders, who had many years of experience in Girl Scout camping, knew how Scouting had helped girls and adults learn about and enjoy the out-of-doors, and wished for a similar organization for adult women. This wish has evolved into a volunteer organization with a national board of directors, local chapters, national and chapter camping events, service projects and the participation of over 2000 interested members in the last 24 years.
From small beginnings in Sacramento, California, which included: skills workshops, cook-outs, camp-outs, backpacking trips, canoe instruction, cross-country skiing, music and arts camps, and other events planned and carried out by the founders, Camping Women has evolved into a volunteer organization that is viable, energetic and nation-wide in influence, participation and scope. Chapters have formed where interested women live, and a monthly newsletter published by the national organization keeps the entire membership informed of local chapter and national events. The organization has no paid staff but is governed and operated by elected volunteer members of Camping Women.

It is important for women who want to go camping to feel safe in the out-of-doors with other women as companions. Camping Women recognizes this need and has provided camping opportunities for women to join together to develop their unique potential, to learn new skills, to develop confidence and self-assurance, and to live in harmony with the environment. A goal of this program is to provide opportunities for women to learn skills and to be exposed to equipment and events that expand their horizons of camping experiences.
We camp in tents, RVs, cabins, and out in the open. We share with one another our knowledge of: camping skills, music and singing, cooking methods, camping gear and shelters, nature identification, and our love of the out-of-doors. Most of all, we have fun!
